Iron Age incense trade along the western spine of Arabia soon reached Nabatean territory. These remarkable people established by 400 B.C. the twin capitals of Hegra (Medain Saleh) in Saudi Arabia and Petra in Jordan. Their control of overland north Arabian trade created immense wealth. Their use of cut family tombs in living rock with elaborate external facades was one manifestation of this wealth. This example comes from Medain Saleh.
