Ptolemy's co-ordinate tables for Southern Arabia, compiled perhaps as early as the second century A.D., have long intrigued cartographers. Sprenger's version published in 1876 has been reproduced many times. Here the map has been annotated with English translations. Note the location of the frankincense region, the Iobaritae (Ubarites = Habarut) and Omanum. Marimatha is most likely the excavated site of Shisur. Moscha on this map has been erroneously placed on the wrong side of Syagrus. Our recent work in the lower Chatramonitae (Hadramaout) has revealed perhaps the site of Embolium.
